ProSocial vs BetterUp (2026): coaching you can buy yourself today, or a human coach through your employer

By Scott Edwards, Founder, ProSocial · Prices checked October 2026

BetterUp stopped selling individual plans on January 31, 2026, and now sells coaching to organizations. If you paid for your own BetterUp coach and valued having someone to work through hard conversations with, here is what ProSocial gives you instead, and what it does not.

The short answer

BetterUp is coaching your employer buys for you: live sessions with a human coach plus coaching in the apps you use at work, with no published price. Its individual plans closed to new members on January 31, 2026, and end for good on January 31, 2027.

Dale is an AI people-skills coach, not a person. That is why you can talk through tomorrow’s conversation at 10 p.m., rehearse it out loud, and repeat the hardest moment as many times as you need, without waiting for an appointment. With membership, Dale prepares you for the meetings on your calendar, debriefs with you afterward, and can check in on Telegram if you agree to it. Membership is $47 a month for full coaching with Dale on your own situations, and you can cancel anytime. A free account, with no card, lets you try Dale on a first situation that Dale presents. One program costs $47 once, and you keep it.

If you want a person as well, you can work with a People Coach certified through Science of People’s People Coach program through “Find a coach” in ProSocial. That is a separate coaching relationship, arranged and priced with the coach, and not part of membership.

Pick BetterUp if your employer offers it and you want live sessions with a human coach on the same platform, coaching inside Slack or Microsoft Teams, or a scope wider than work skills.

Pick ProSocial if you are paying for yourself and the work is how you come across: a hard conversation with a coworker or your boss, a meeting you keep losing, an interview, or a career move.

The real difference is not the feature list

If what you valued in BetterUp was having someone to think out loud with about work, the question is what that looks like once your plan ends.

BetterUp sells to organizations now. If your company does not offer it, you cannot buy it. We built ProSocial for the person paying for themselves. With membership, bring Dale the situation as it is: the coworker who has gone curt, the boss who keeps moving the deadline. Dale talks it through with you and helps you work out what you need from the conversation. Then you rehearse it out loud: start from the closest role-play, such as Resolving Coworker Conflict, and Dale sets it up with your situation: who it is with, what you need, and what you are worried about. A counterpart pushes back, and you run the hardest moment again until it holds. Afterward, you tell Dale how it went.

What you practice and how it’s scored

“Resolving Coworker Conflict” is a voice role-play set on a quick video call with Alex, a senior peer who has become curt and feels overloaded by correcting errors. It builds Adaptive Agility, Diplomatic Assertiveness, and Emotional Regulation, and it comes with membership.

  • Goal: “Address the tension directly, understand Alex’s workload and quality concerns, and negotiate a workable process without escalating blame.”
  • Focus cue: “Open with curiosity about what Alex is experiencing before defending yourself or the team.”
  • Focus cue: “Separate the relationship issue from the process issue: tone, workload, review steps, and quality checks.”
  • Focus cue: “Look for a specific agreement such as peer review, clearer ownership, or escalation rules.”
  • Scoring: the role-play is scored on the People Skills Index skills it’s tagged with, then you debrief with Dale.

If the hard conversation is with your manager, start from “Negotiating Project Deadlines”, “Peer-to-Peer Feedback”, or “Giving Difficult Feedback to a Superior”. See the example debrief on this page for what you get back.

What BetterUp is genuinely better at

  • Live human coaching on the same platform. Through an employer, BetterUp offers live sessions with a human coach. In ProSocial, a People Coach is a separate relationship you arrange and pay for with the coach.
  • Coaching inside Slack and Teams. BetterUp coaches employees in the apps they use at work. ProSocial’s Slack and Teams connections are coming soon.
  • A wider scope. BetterUp’s Whole Person Model reaches beyond work skills into wellbeing. ProSocial focuses on people skills and career moves.

What ProSocial is genuinely better at

  • You can buy it yourself. Sign up free today, with no card needed. Membership is $47 a month. Or your employer can provide it through ProSocial for organizations.
  • Coaching when the conversation is tomorrow. With membership, talk to Dale by text or live voice at any hour, rehearse out loud, and repeat the hard part as often as you need. Dale helps you prepare for real meetings on your Google or Outlook calendar and debriefs with you afterward.
  • Feedback on how you sound and look. Voice analysis covers pace, pauses, pitch, energy, filler words, and whether your voice stays steady when the other person pushes back. Cue Mirror (in High-Impact Communication or membership) shows your face and hands live on camera, and with membership, video analysis reads your expressions in a recorded presentation or interview.
  • Email that gets read. Email Audit, free once you connect email, reviews emails you sent and shows where you hedge or bury your point. The Charisma Coach Chrome extension, which comes with High-Impact Communication or membership, scores your Gmail drafts for warmth and competence and suggests rewrites.
  • Knowing which social skills to build. The People Skills Index is a roughly 30-minute assessment of how you respond to realistic video situations across seven trainable social skills, blind spots included, and Dale coaches you from your results.

Dale“Asking what Alex was dealing with lowered the tension quickly. You then mixed the relationship issue with the process issue, so the agreement stayed vague. Separate them, and leave with one specific change, such as clearer ownership or a review step.”

A note if your BetterUp plan is ending

BetterUp’s help center says renewals for monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual individual plans ended after July 31, 2026, and the individual program ends on January 31, 2027. It recommends saving your coaching work and message history before your plan’s final day. Before your last session, write down the goals you were working on and the situations that keep coming up, so you can bring them to Dale.

  • Free, no card needed: your first realistic situation, which Dale presents, and Dale’s feedback on it; connecting your calendar and email for feedback, including Email Audit of emails you’ve sent; and two free programs, the Conversation Archetype Quiz and How to Calm Someone Down, which has two voice role-plays. Free does not include coaching with Dale on your own situations or rehearsing from the full library, such as Resolving Coworker Conflict.
  • $47 once: one program, which you keep. You get everything in that program, with Dale coaching you through it; in programs with role-plays, Dale sets them up with your situation. Difficult People Decoded, for example, applies nine video lessons to one real interaction, with three role-plays: acknowledge pressure, adapt a request, and hold a boundary.
  • $47 a month or $470 a year (two months free), cancel anytime: membership. Full coaching with Dale on your own meetings and messages, which means rehearsing your situations in any of the 171 library role-plays, preparing for meetings on your calendar, and debriefing afterward. It also includes every program and all 171 role-plays. Progress tracking is included. This is the closest thing to what you had with BetterUp.

Questions

Can I still sign up for BetterUp as an individual?

No. BetterUp stopped selling new individual subscriptions and coaching sessions on January 31, 2026. It now sells coaching through organizations, and the individual program ends on January 31, 2027.

Is Dale a person?

No. That is why you can talk to Dale at any hour, rehearse out loud as often as you need, and never wait for an appointment. If you want a human coach too, you can work with a People Coach certified through Science of People’s People Coach program through a separate relationship arranged with the coach.

How does a human People Coach work, and what does it cost?

People Coaches are certified through Science of People’s People Coach program, and you can find one through “Find a coach” in ProSocial. Working with one is a separate relationship: you arrange it and agree on the price directly with the coach, ProSocial does not publish coach prices, and it is not included in membership. Your coach sees your shared thread, the work they assign you and its results, and anything you choose to share. Your own conversations with Dale stay private.

What can I bring to Dale?

With membership, the situations you would bring to a coach about work: a tense coworker, a hard conversation with your boss, a meeting where your point keeps getting lost, an interview, a career move, or an email you need to get right. Dale helps you think it through, prepares you, rehearses it with you, and debriefs with you afterward.

Can I try ProSocial for free?

Yes, and no card is needed. A free account includes your first realistic situation, which Dale presents, and Dale’s feedback on it; connecting your calendar and email for feedback, including Email Audit of emails you’ve sent; and two free programs, the Conversation Archetype Quiz and How to Calm Someone Down, which has two voice role-plays. One program is $47 once: you get everything in that program, with Dale coaching you through it, and you keep it. Programs with role-plays have Dale set them up with your situation. Membership is $47 a month or $470 a year (two months free), cancel anytime: full coaching with Dale on your own meetings and messages, which means rehearsing your situations in any of the 171 library role-plays, preparing for meetings on your calendar, and debriefing afterward, plus every program and all 171 role-plays.
